The
activities of scientific library of the Institute of Biology of the
Southern Seas The scientific library of the Institute of Biology of
the Southern Seas (IBSS) operates as a modern information centre which
provides adequate information support to current and planned investigations
using its own stock, remote access to electronic resources and interlibrary
subscription, and focuses primarily on diverse researches of the Black
Sea.
Head of the library is Olga A. Akimova,
the IODE National Coordinator for Marine Information Management from
Ukraine. The
scientific library is incorporated into international library associations:
since 1994 into EURASLIC and since 2006 into IAMSLIC. During 2002-2004
Olga Akimova was among the board as a Member representative of European
Association of Marine Libraries and Information Centres (EURASLIC),
since 2005 she has been in the board as the National Representative
of Ukraine and as the Representative of the European Countries in Economic
Transition (ЕСЕТ) group. As an active member of the association, Olga
Akimova takes part in the conferences and meetings, makes reports and
initiates projects some of which have been supported by IOC UNESCO,
IODE, EURASLIC and IAMSLIC. For example, Black Sea Informational Cooperation
project (BLICOP) - the project proposed and now coordinated by Olga
Akimova, or ODINECET, the recent project to elaboration of which she
directly contributed. She is also included in the Coordinating Group
that deals with projects within the framework of the ODINECET initiative.
From 2007 she is the ODINECET project coordinator. Two of those projects
have born fruits: “ECET Union List of Serials” and the First ODINECET
Training Course on Marine Information Management which was held at the
IOC Project Office for IODE between 13 and 24 March 2006. In
the latter Olga Akimova worked both as the organizer and the trainer
for the group of librarians from ECET countries. In October 2006 she
took part in the Conference of IAMSLIC in Portland, Oregon (USA), and
presented a report on the ODINECET initiative project. In accord with
the proposal by Olga Akimova, the next 12-th conference of EURASLIC
was held in Каradag, Crimea (Ukraine) in May 2007; back-to-back to this
conference there was The First Regional Regional Training Course in
Marine Information Management (MIM). The Training was organized by Olga
Akimova. Ten aquatic librarians from Ukraine and Russia took part in
this training. The Programme of the training course included the basic
knowledge on MIM. Special attention was paid to creating and management
of the institutional e-repositories.
As
a cooperating centre of Aquatic Sciences and Fishery Information System
(ASFIS) on preparation of analytical and bibliographic data from aquatic
sciences for the World Data Bank of the ASFA monthly journal and a participant
of a number of consortia (INTAS, AGORA, EBSCO) providing for access
to full-text electronic resources, the scientific library of IBSS satisfies
the interest of researchers in many detailed aspects of the most recent
advances made in their disciplines.
